I was thinking about one of my characters, Carys. Carys is a singer, and while he’s severely mentally ill he makes it a point of honor to dismiss and belittle his own pain, and make art out of it. He insists up and down that the emotions in his art are extremely exaggerated. And it’s kinda funny to me because it isn’t really true.
Anybody else would have flipped their shit. Carys thinks about it for a little while - and you have to remember, he's in love with Jason - and decides he doesn't care much. Jason keeps coming over, they have a lot less sex, and Carys tries to gently lead Jason into the idea that he needs to tell his girlfriend that he's gay.
When Jason does at last manage to come clean to his gf, she asks to meet Carys, and Carys agrees. They end up taking a liking to each other, bond over the fact that Jason is a complete fucking headcase, thank god he's off discovering himself in the states, and swap numbers. before Jason left, he told Carys he was changing his number, but he. didn't do that, and they still text too.
Carys's next ep is about that summer. it's very sad. many people cry about it. the mvs are even worse. and Carys is still texting Jason and Emily. Emily has a corgi now. Jason has a drum kit.
What I love most about Carys is that this kind of story is entirely plausible for him. He would do that! and he would be very sad about being the other woman and also make fun of himself in interviews, and also sing about being That Person, and guilt. And he can do all of those things at once because at his core he doesn't think his pain matters all that much - except for being a sort of public spectacle - and also because he has a very sharp mental divide between his life and his art, and he hates the idea that one can affect the other. he hates it so much but he can't escape it, so he tries to be ~ironical~ about it, and that doesn't work out too well for him either.
